About
the Longboard
The Longboard (or Malibus or Mals)
dates back to surfings roots and although many improvements have been
added to its performance - the overall characteristcis remain the
same.
Firstly they're very floaty. This is born through its large volume
(comprised of its width, thickness and length). They also paddle extremely
easily (due to its volume) and thus have the potential to catch the
tiniest of waves. This is why they're so popular in countries with
smaller/weaker surf. In knee to waist high waves its far easier to
surf waves on longboards (compared to anything smaller - the smaller
board the more difficult it is!).
There are two main kinds of longboard. The "nose rider or classic
malibu" and the "performance or allrounder malibu".
Both catch waves easily, but the classic style is generally weightier,
catches 'anything' (nearly!) and is ideal for nose riding. The Performance
mal is more progressive and turns easier for more 'radical' manouvres.
